About EKAL Abhiyan
EKAL Abhiyan is an initiative to bring basic education to every child across rural India. The movement started in 1989 with a handful of Vidyalayas, with a mission to empower the young generation by eliminating illiteracy, providing elementary education in the remotest hinterlands of rural and tribal villages of India, which recently has grown to massive network of 1,02,091 Vidyalayas in June 2020.

In this pandemic situation, it’s our humble request to all to come forward and contribute generously for our initiative to raise funds through crowdfunding to impart education to most deprived section of Indian society and empowering our villages.
EKAL Vidyalaya as a concept
EKAL Vidyalaya works on the concept of One Teacher One School. The total expense of running one school for entire year is just Rs. 22,000, typically teaching around 25-30 students per school. For this we select a young Matriculate i.e. 10th Pass Boy or a Girl from the same village with the consent of the Village Panchayat and appoint them as a teacher. Teachers start a three hour non formal school, daily, in open or a place organized by the Village Panchayat for the children in the age group of 6 to14 yrs. Till date, we have enrolled more than 28 Lacs students across the country.
Ekal has always embraced technology by providing one Tab to each teacher and to impart Computer education, mobile vans are deployed which are powered by rooftop Solar panels.
Focus on Primary Education & Holistic Development
Ekal started working on the Basic primary education in remote villages to enable children to understand the importance of Education in life and have access to further higher education.
Students who don’t have access to education in hinterlands for some reasons, EKal imparts basic education of Reading, Writing, Arithmetic and inculcates awareness on Hygiene, Cleanliness, Fundamental Rights of an Indian citizen. It works on holistic development of children by enabling them to become a better citizen and a human being, we stress on teaching moral values, physical exercise, sports to equip them suitably to lead a better life.
Social Change in our Society
Over time Ekal diversified its intervention towards holistic development of villages, by inducting educative programs such as:
- Health and Hygiene up-keep by preventive measures and using local resources.
- Organic Farming with eco-friendly resources suitable for soil, manure and seeds at negligible input cost to enhance soil output.
- Skill Development programmes to empowerment women and
- Digital/ Computer education by mobile vans with Solar panels mounted on top.
Accolades and Achievements:
1. EkalAbhiyan Trust has won the International Gandhi Peace Prize for the year 2017 for the contribution in providing education to rural and tribal children in remote areas, rural empowerment, gender and social equality by Hon’ble President of India Shri Ram Nath Kovind on February 26, 2019. https://youtu.be/qHr4caeTADg
2. On 4th January 2019 Bharat Lok Shiksha Parishad received a CSR award in Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi in 2019 under the category of "Excellent education provided to the weaker section of the society."
